CAPITAL WASTE (Liam Somerville) is a cinematographer and video artist living on the unceded traditional lands of the Kaurna people in South Australia. Known for both his glitchy, analog video aesthetic as well as DIY virtual production with real-time 3D animation, his unorthodox, experimental mash of visual technologies can be consumed via cinema, live performance, projections or online experiences. Recent projects include cinematography for ‘ I take care of what’s mine’ (2024) by Emmaline Zanelli which screened at Samstag Museum throughout the Adelaide Film Festival 2024 and at Museum of Contempory Art (MCA). Other works include largescale projection- PROJECT : EARTH premiered at the 2024 Adelaide Fringe Festival and saw over 30,000 participants over the three week season, winning a weekly Best Film & Digital or Interactive Award. CAPITAL WASTE’s music video, Killer by Plastiq is playing on MTV and claimed a handful of awards including Best Experimental Award at London Music Video Awards 2023.


CAPITAL WASTE’s live visuals have been witnessed at Unsound Festival, National Gallery of Victoria, AGSA, WOMADelaide, Fringe Festival, Adelaide Botanic Gardens, Illuminate Adelaide, The Mill and Denver Museum of Science. Collaborating with musical acts such as Pussy Riot, Gabber Modus Operandi, EYE, Plastiq, female wizard, DJ Plead, kode9 and Team Rolfes.


At the moment CAPITAL WASTE is obsessed with the virtual 3D world and inputting human interactions and dynamic movement into the often sterile digital space using realtime game development engines to create visuals for live performances, VR experiences, projection installations and music videos such as ESCHATECH VR (2024), marine_digital­_conservation_SA_2023.exe (2023) and Universal Killer (2023).

As a cinematographer, recent projects include ‘I take care of what’s mine’ (2024) by Emmaline Zanelli which screened at Samstag Museum throughout the Adelaide Film Festival 2024. Liam also has many credits as a documentary DOP including The Angels: Kickin’ Down The Door (Universal Studios 2022) and Video Nasty: The Making of Ribspreader (Closer Productions 2020). They also undertake commercial cinematographer work for television commercials including and music videos with bands such as The Superjesus, West Thebarton, Dem Mob, Nelson Dialect and Quartz Pistol.
